blj_bullet.gif (1811 bytes)   ATTRACTING BIRDS TO YOUR YARD

Birds need water,  food and shelter.  Different birds have different requirements.  Due to all of the urban development we have taken much of the area they once had in nature and now we need to provide the missing elements.  We have cut many forest and filled far too much of our wetlands and I fear we will lose many of the beautiful birds that once thrived in this country if we do not aid in providing them the basics of life.  It is very important to protect our wildlife if we want our grandchildren to enjoy them as much as we have.  There is nothing like the sound of a bird singing to signify that spring is here.

Birds  need a lot of water for drinking and bathing.  you can use a  bird bath or a shallow dish of water, or you can add a small pond to your yard. You can invest as little or as much as you   want in to this.

Water should be less than  2"  deep,  Birds  will  drink   at  ground level but would have an advantage to better view  possible predators such as cats if you on a pedestal or stump. Also placing  water container near a tree will help if they need a quick escape.Water  should always be clear and container kept  clean, you should wash and scrub it with a 10 percent bleach solution once a month to keep the birds from spreading illness among them.

blj_bullet.gif (1811 bytes)  FOOD

You can provide plants, shrubs and trees that provide food, nectar and nesting material such as grasses, flowers, fruit and berries. You can keep your bird feeders well stocked,  throw  out your bread scraps or crumbs for them too.

blj_bullet.gif (1811 bytes)  SHELTER

Planting  trees and  scrubs will provide shelter and  a place for them to build there nests, or you can   buy or make bird houses and feeders for them. We have some plans for feeders that are very simple to make right here at Enchanted Gardens or you may look at our list of links for other ideas and plans for bird houses as well.  It is very important that with any bird feeder or house that you may make or purchase to have an easy and convenient way to clean them good.   Bird houses should be cleaned out each year if you wish to provide healthy homes for your wild birds.
